Our family Christmas traditions

Each family celebrates the holidays differently. I thought it might be fun to share the ways in which we all celebrate. Here are ours:
- We gather on Christmas Eve to visit with my side of the family. We play games, eat and sing Christmas songs while my sister plays the keyboard.
- Daniel and I help the kids make cookies for Santa.
- We drink hot Dr Pepper with cinnamon sticks, just the way my daddy used to make it.
- Daniel and I make a Christmas Eve run to the local drug store and the kids stay with my mom. We each get a certain amount of money to buy each other stocking stuffers, since we do not buy gifts for each other. We try to keep the stuff hidden from each other. It is so much fun!
- The kids hang up their giant stockings that my grandma made for them.
- We allow the kids to open the pajamas we bought for them and wear them to bed.
- Daniel and I put the kids to bed after reading Christmas stories and wait for them to fall asleep so we can get everything ready for Santa’s visit.
- We have a big breakfast on Christmas morning with my mom and open presents.
- On Christmas afternoon, we join Daniel’s family for a fun filled time of yummy food, presents and great company!
- We wait until the day after Christmas to clean up all of the Christmas mess!

1. Christmas eve is spent at home with my husbands side of the family. I spend all morning cooking and setting things up for family. Everyone arrives around 4:00-4:30, we eat, I clean the messes. We open presents. I clean the messes! Everyone leaves between 8 and 9 and guess what...I clean the messes. My kids, who are 12,9,8, and 5. leave cookies for Santa and scatter the yard with oats for the reindeer. (I do always enjoy watching them do this with all the joy and anticipation on there faces) They put on new pjs and go to bed.
Christmas morning we wake up open what Santa brought, then head to my moms house. I help my mom cook the kids open presents, I help my mom clean up, we go home. I spend the day listening to kids yell for help opening something or getting batteries or arguing with a sibling.

In my family, the lead up to Christmas involves taking the children Carol Singing along the streets to raise money for charities such as Cancer Research, St Marys Hospice and Acorns Childrens Hospice. We also like to share our appreciation to houses that are decorated beautifully, so we create little cards to express such thoughts.
On Christmas eve we don't really do much. I spend Christmas at my moms (as it is also her birthday). I put Paul (my 5 year old brother) to bed and read him a christmas story and talk to him about the meaning of Christmas and the story of Jesus' birth. When he is asleep I fill the stockings and hang them on the beds. Sometimes we organise individual piles of gifts and take it in turn to open them (i find this easier so that it gives me more order when I am writing who gifts are from so that we can write thank you notes for them), other times we just take a gift from beneath the tree and open them as they come.
We then have christmas dinner. I'd usually pop to see my dad after dinner, but he sadly passed away last year so this year we just stayed at moms. My nieces come around (aged 4 and 6) and the children all play together with their new gifts. Then we have a birthday cake for my moms birthday and tidy up as we go through the day.
I like to go to Church on Christmas day, but the rest of my family are against this so often I just pray and give my thanks to God in my room.
Later we begin the thank you notes and sing Christmas songs before going to bed.
