Do You Feel Pretty?
What do you think when you look in the mirror? Do you see everything that is wrong with you? Do you curse the extra ten pounds that you just cannot seem to lose? Do you silently wish away those lines around you eyes, or the unruly curls in your hair? We are all guilty of being hard on our physical appearances. It is in our nature and fueled by the media.
Girls are raised with Barbies, boys with G.I.Joes. We look up to movie stars who are praised for being svelte and graceful. Our models seem to keep getting thinner by the year. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show boasts “perfectly” proportioned women in thousand dollar lingerie. Is this healthy for our self esteem? No. It is only healthy for the pockets of those who feed on our self loathing and desire to feel prettier, be skinnier, or look like somebody better than ourselves.
What is the perfect size? What is beauty? It seems to be whatever the media tells us it is. Our daughters are growing up in a world that worships an image of beauty that only a few select women ever resemble. It is no small wonder that the rates of eating disorders and plastic surgery is on the rise annually. I see it everywhere. I see it in myself and it makes me sad.
What can we do? We can rage against it if we so choose. Author Jess Weiner authored a book called, Life Doesn’t Begin 5 Pounds from Now.
It discusses the language of fat, how to break the cycle and love ourselves and the beauties that we truly are. I had the privilege of interviewing Jess on my radio show www.theclassyclosetshow.com and she was an absolute inspiration. I highly recommend you read her book and take a good look at your self perception.
