When the phone rang, I knew in my stomach that life was about to change. The caller id screen said ‘Ricochet Prod’. I knew that once we started this journey, there would be no turning back. I knew that putting my family in front of millions of strangers would certainly be a choice we’d have to live with. I also knew, however, that I could no longer bear the burden of the stress I was feeling. I needed help.
After many phone interviews, an audition crew came out to meet us. They followed us around all day and I was a nervous wreck because the kids were not being bad. Yes, I said it….I wanted them to be bad! I knew that if they didn’t show their true colors, we would not stand a chance of getting Jo’s help. I was secretly praying that Daniel would have one of his many meltdowns, or that Ella would shave a bald spot on her head… again. But oher than a few squabbles and whining, the kids were pretty tame, dammit.
When the crew left our home, with the audition tape in their hands, I so desperately wanted to explain that it is usually worse than they’d seen. I wanted to cry my eyes out and plead with them to beg Jo to come, on my behalf. I just knew that there were thousands of other families who probably had it worse than we did. I knew that it would be the last time a camera followed us around. Jo would probably roll her eyes and wonder why we even wasted her time, as she tossed our tape out the window. I spent the next few days on pins and needles.
A few days later the phone rang again…
