The Parent Company is a passionate and leading provider of First Aid training for babies and children. They teach in order to empower parents and carers to respond confidently in an emergency.

Managing Mum, Kerri Summers is passionate about First Aid for Babies and Children because she knows from personal experience that it can save a life. Her son Luke, choked on a grape at 13 months and almost certainly would not be here today were it not for the actions of a friend who administered Basic Life Support until the ambulance arrived. He was on a life support machine for 5 days and severe brain damage seemed inevitable. Incredibly after two weeks in hospital he came home with no permanent damage to his body or brain.

After Luke’ accident Kerri collaborated with Dr Peter Thompson from Kings College Hospital Paediatric Emergency department to develop a new First Aid learning experience. Together they concluded that classes needed to be:

  • small to ensure individual attention,
  • taught exclusively by exceptional paediatric nurses with experience in Accident and Emergency,
  • held in the home or workplace at a time and date of the learners choice, and
  • supported by easy-to-read wall charts to aid learning and act as a reminder after the class

Peter has developed two classes which have been available since 2001. Since then The Parent Company’s team of friendly and experienced Paediatric nurses have taught thousands of parents and carers the practical skills needed to respond to medical accidents and emergencies. More importantly, the company has contributed to parents and carers belief in their own abilities, and empowered them respond confidently in an emergency.

AT HOME WITH BASIC LIFE SUPPORT which covers what to do if a baby or small child is choking or not breathing. In the class resuscitation dolls are used to take participants through the steps to follow in an emergency situation.

AT HOME WITH ACCIDENTS AND INJURY which teaches first responder action for the 12 most common accidents or injuries – limb injury, wounds and cuts, burns and scalds, nose bleeds, allergic reaction, eye injuries, overdose or poisoning, electric shock, head injury, major trauma and falls, drowning and lost parts. The class also covers fever management and medical emergencies including breathing difficulties, convulsions, meningitis and abdominal pain.

The Parent Company will also work with parents to develop customised tuition based upon their own family circumstances. This allows them to focus on their own areas of concern and interest.
