Supernanny's Voice Training Technique
When you need to discipline your child, everything about you needs to say you mean it. And when you're praising your child, your enthusiasm needs to shine through. Use the voice training technique to help you project calm control or positive attention just when you need it.
Discipline
- Stay CALM! This is not about shouting (get more help on staying calm with your kids).
- Come down so you're on your child's eye level, maintain eye contact and hold still.
- Lightly hold your child's shoulders if you need her to focus, without restraining or being rough.
- Choose a short phrase your child will recognise and that you feel comfortable repeating, for example 'no, stop that' or 'this behavior is not acceptable'.
- Using a low tone of voice, deliver your message, telling her in simple terms what it is she did wrong. Ask if she understands.
- Warn your child that if this behavior continues there will be consequences (read about proper use of the naughty step).
Reward
- Get eye contact with your child, no need to come down to his level.
- Use a high tone, and have a standard phrase like 'good boy!' or 'well done, champ!'
- Be specific: make sure your child knows exactly what he did right. Learn more about praising and rewarding your child, the Supernanny way.
