Choosing the right House Rules for your family
What age?
Your child should be able to understand you expect certain behavior from him from about the age of three. Use pictures or symbols next to the words if your child can't yet read.
How many?
Try one year, one rule: start with three, simple rules for a 3 year-old, and so on.
What else?
Back up your House Rules with clear, agreed consequences (like time out, loss of privileges) when he crosses boundaries, and heaps of praise alongside a good reward system when he does it right.
