The best of both worlds

Some say WAHMs (work-at-home moms) have the best of both worlds; with a flexible schedule, you have more time to spend with your growing children, plus you get the additional income and daily stimulation many moms miss when they give up the day job to raise a family.

There are some excellent opportunities out there, but think carefully before you choose your path, this way you’ll find a job which suits both your skill set and your timetable.

Top ten ways to make money from home

  1. Telecommute selling advertising: Much in demand, internet advertising commands big bucks so you can too. Specialise in an area of your interest and build a big contact book – here’s a job you can take anywhere.
Training: Some training on the basics of internet advertising is usually available from hiring agencies.
Flexibility: Business to business jobs usually work around office hours, but you’ll be able to pick your days.
  2. Become a Herbalife distributor: If you’re dedicated to health and nutrition, becoming a Herbalife distributor will mean you can work in an area which matches your interests.
Training: You’ll receive extensive training in their large product range, and can specialise in the area you find most interesting.
Flexibility: Work as much or as little as you’d like – the ultimate in flexibility!
  3. Writing and journalism: High standard writers are always in demand, particularly if you can write knowledgably on a range of topics.
Training: Good spelling and grammar will go a long way, as will enthusiasm for your subject.
Flexibility: You’ll have deadlines, so be sensible about the work you take on.
  4. Blog product reviews: Savvy shopper? Product reviews are one of the most popular things people search for online, with consumers – and companies - everywhere becoming ever more aware of the power of a good review.
Training: There’s plenty of info online on how to manage and develop a blog successfully.
Flexibility: Intensive work whilst you’re building an audience, your blog will practically write itself once you have a good following.
  5. Train as a web developer: Technically-minded with an eye for design? Web development is a challenging and well-paid option once you’ve grasped the basics.
Training: Local adult education colleges and online learning facilities can provide you with basic training and qualifications very reasonably.
Flexibility: You’ll be working to deadline but able to choose your own hours.
  6. Trade on Ebay: With real bargains to be made in online trading, you can make great money trading in items picked up in sales or thrift stores. If you know what you’re looking for, that is...
Training: You’ll develop an eye for what’s popular, but start out selling things you know about.
Flexibility: Trade as much or as little as you like but be reliable, and be prepared to schedule lots of trips to the post!
  7. Manage a community: A sociable communicator can make a forum popular but knowing how to moderate and managing other moderators will help it stay that way. Make sure you get involved in a community which follows your interests.
Training: Today’s user-friendly forums are easy to learn, so even if you’ve never moderated before you’ll soon get the hang of the software.
Flexibility: This role is highly flexible, but if you’re moderating you will need to check in regularly.
  8.  Translator: If you’re bi- or even trilingual, make the most of it. The secretarial and sales markets are always on the lookout for people with languages, and there’s excellent money to be made translating manuals and technical literature.
Training: You must be fluent in your second language, trying to fake it could prove disastrous.
Flexibility: Choosing straight translation will mean managing deadlines, whereas using your languages in a communicative capacity may mean working set hours each day.
  9. Part-time PA: Are you a born organiser? Do you know your way around office systems? Opportunities exist for remote PAs to manage the diaries and outbound mail of busy business executives, via email and over the phone.
Training: Knowledge of office systems is a must, as is a good phone manner. You might also need short-hand for dictation and an adequate typing speed.
Flexibility: You can stipulate your hours, but must be prepared to make yourself available at set times of the day and week.
  10.  Internet marketing: Do you know your PPC from your SEO, have an understanding of internet advertising and know how major search engines work? Then this is the choice for you. Companies will pay good money to raise their search engine profile, and agencies are springing up using freelance workers to correspond to demand.
Training: Even if you don’t have much experience, feel confident to dip your toe in the water: This is one job you can train yourself on pretty quickly with just your internet connection.
Flexibility: Midnight or mid-morning, it’s all the same online. This is a very flexible career but you have to put the hours in.
